After just a few weeks away from the sport, Enzo Maresca has given his thoughts over a possible move to Serie A.

Enzo Maresca has opened the door to a managerial role in Serie A and gave his thoughts over Italy’s chances at the 2026 World Cup.

Enzo Maresca Opens Door To Serie A Job

The former Chelsea manager has been out of work since New Year’s Day, after being relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge over a reported fall-out with the club’s hierarchy.

Maresca took charge of 92 matches during his time in the English capital, winning the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last season.

The Italian also won the Premier League as Pep Guardiola’s assistant with Manchester City in 2022/23, before lifting the EFL Championship with Leicester during his first season as a head coach in England.

Despite this success in England, there have been calls for Maresca to consider jobs across Europe and the 45-year-old attended the Panchina d’Oro Award ceremony in Covercian – where he gave his thoughts over managing in Serie A.

Maresca said: “I’m doing well abroad, but we’ll see. What matters is not what you’ve done, but your willingness.”

Despite his nationality, Maresca has never managed in Serie A, but the former Chelsea boss did take charge of 13 Serie B matches during his time with Parma.

Serie A has seen multiple managerial departures this season, with Alberto Gilardino being the latest after parting ways with Pisa on February 1st.

Maresca will not be looking to manage a relegation-battling side in Italy, but could spark an interest if an opening near the top of Serie A becomes available.

The 45-year-old has also been linked with the Italian national team, as Gennaro Gattuso could be made surplus to requirements if the Azzurri fail to reach the 2026 World Cup.

Italy Must Qualify For 2026 World Cup

Maresca has never managed at an international level, but the uncertainty surrounding Gattuso could bring the former Leicester City boss into contention.

Italy will face Northern Ireland on March 26th and a win will see Gattuso’s side face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in a final played away from home.

Gattuso has been struck with multiple injury concerns ahead of the clash against Northern Ireland, as Giovanni Di Lorenzo faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Despite these issues, Gattuso is expected to guide the Azzurri into the tournament and failure to do so will bring an end to the Italian’s time in charge.

Maresca has provided his thoughts over the current Italian national team and believes the world will make fun of the Azzurri if they do not qualify this year.

Maresca said: “I hope they make it to the World Cup, and I’m optimistic. I’m cheering for them also because, otherwise, they’ll make fun of us even more abroad.

“Let’s hope this time we manage to get to the World Cup and I wish that for Italy, for Gennaro and everyone.”
