Possession did not decide the evening. On the hour Bartesaghi’s own goal brought Bologna level at 2-2, and in the 62nd minute Mbangula put them back in front, with Miranda supplying the assist.

Bologna picked up both of the game’s bookings as they protected their lead, with Pobega cautioned in the 76th minute and Heggem in the 84th. Mbangula then sealed the win in the 86th minute from an Odgaard assist.

Milan’s unbeaten league start ends before the Inter derby

Milan went into the round fifth in the table on 18 points, unbeaten in Serie A with 5 wins and 3 draws from 8 games. Bologna started it 13th on 8 points.

It was Milan’s second defeat in three matches in all competitions, after the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, with a 2-0 win over Udinese in between. Bologna have now won two in a row, having beaten Cagliari 2-0 in their previous outing.

The result also broke Milan’s recent hold on this fixture. They had won the last two league meetings, 3-0 in Bologna on 3 February 2026 and 1-0 on 14 September 2025. Bologna’s previous win over Milan was a 1-0 victory in the Coppa Italia on 14 May 2025.

There is little time to recover. Milan face Inter in Serie A on Saturday 31 October, the same day Bologna take on Monza.
