Torino beat Udinese 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Monday in Serie A’s sixth round. Sandro Kulenović scored the winner in the 67th minute after Jurgen Ekkelenkamp had cancelled out Daniel Bragança’s opener before half-time.

The result ended a two-match losing run for Ignazio Abate’s side against Udinese. The Friulians had won 2-1 in Turin in January and 2-0 at home in May.

Bragança put Torino ahead in the 36th minute. He was rated 8.05 for an evening that lasted 54 minutes.

Udinese replied seven minutes later. Ekkelenkamp levelled in the 43rd minute, and it was 1-1 at the interval. The visitors’ attacker finished with a rating of 8.17, the highest on the pitch, and took 5 shots.

The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half. Kulenović, not named in the starting XI, scored in the 67th minute and earned a 7.67 rating in his 26 minutes on the field. Nicolo Bertola was booked for a foul in the 89th minute, the only card of the night from referee Valerio Crezzini.

Udinese’s 62% possession brings one shot on target

Kosta Runjaic’s side had the ball for long spells. Udinese held 62% possession, completed 583 of 641 passes and had 15 shots to Torino’s 12. Only one of those efforts was on target, and it was Ekkelenkamp’s goal, so Lucas Perri did not need to make a save.

Torino were far more direct. They put 4 shots on target and created 2.47 expected goals against Udinese’s 0.72. Their 7 offsides suggest how often they ran in behind. They also committed just 4 fouls to the visitors’ 10.

Torino climb to 12th before the Parma trip

The win lifts Torino to 12th with 7 points from 6 games. They are now unbeaten in two after the 1-1 draw with Bologna, and that follows a 2-0 defeat to AS Roma.

Udinese stay 15th on 4 points. Parma and Fiorentina, in 18th and 19th, have the same total. This was a fourth straight league defeat for Runjaic’s team after losses to Lazio, Inter and Cagliari. Including the 1-1 draw with Pogon Szczecin, they are without a win in five matches in all competitions. Their last victory was 2-1 against Venezia.

The pressure on Udinese will be immediate. They host Lecce on Sunday 18 October. Torino travel to Parma the following evening, Monday 19 October, to face a side sitting in the relegation zone on 4 points.
