Antonio Conte’s high-flying side cruised to a 2-0 victory at Stadio Diego Maradona to get closer to a second Scudetto in three years.

Napoli and Inter headed into this round level on points after the Partenopei bridged the gap with a late 1-0 win at rock-bottom Monza last weekend. However, Roma stunned Simone Inzaghi’s side earlier in the day, offering the Naples outfit a chance to go alone at the table’s summit.

The match couldn’t have started any better for Conte’s lads. Talismanic midfielder Scott McTominay added to his ever-growing Serie A tally only seven minutes into the game. He latched onto Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s low cross and put the ball home despite failing to take it cleanly.

Four minutes before halftime, McTominay struck again. This time, he pounced on Matteo Politano’s delivery from an identical spot. Though he had a defender on him, the former Manchester United ace struck the ball with venom, leaving no chance to Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. As such, Napoli entered the break 2-0 up.

Napoli refused to take their feet off the gas after the halftime interval and continued to push forward in search of a third goal. Philip Billing should’ve scored off the bench but only hit the crossbar from a few meters out after heading Leonardo Spinazzola’s cross goalward.

Without further ado, let’s jump straight to our player ratings.

Napoli (4-2-3-1)

Alex Meret – 6

Merely a spectator in the first half, the Napoli goalkeeper didn’t have to make a single save. Nothing changed after the break.

Mathias Olivera – 6

Though he fared reasonably well in defense, the Uruguayan desperately lacked composure on the ball, frequently giving away possession when he had better options.

Alessandro Buongiorno – 7

Back from a brief spell on the sidelines, Buongiorno enjoyed a superb match, with his physicality and dominant aerial presence making it nearly impossible for Torino to test Meret.

Amir Rrahmani – 7

Che Adams slipped his mark early on, nearly leading to Torino’s equalizer. However, everything else was spot on, as the Kosovo international held up his end of the bargain.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 7

Another tireless shift from the Napoli captain, who kept things tight at the back and frequently supported attacks down the right flank with his trademark tenaciousness.

Scott McTominay – 8

There’s no better way to describe McTominay’s performance than match-winning! He perfected a knack for arriving in the box at the perfect moment. His finishing was lethal!

Stanislav Lobotka – 6.5

The diminutive midfielder bossed the midfield with his movement and aggression off the ball. Virtually every Napoli attack flowed through him, as he dictated the tempo with pinpoint precision.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa – 7

Conte can be proud of the Cameroonian’s showing, particularly now that he has been heavily linked with a summer departure from Napoli. An early assist seemingly bolstered his confidence for the rest of the game.

Leonardo Spinazzola – 7

After an unenviable performance against Monza last weekend, the skilled wingback impressed tonight, creating havoc inside Torino’s box with repeated overlapping runs and dangerous crosses.

Matteo Politano – 7.5

It felt like he was always a step ahead of his marker. In addition to the assist for McTominay, the ex-Inter winger showcased his brilliant technique multiple times to keep Torino defenders on the back foot.

Romelu Lukaku – 6

The towering striker spent most of the night in physical battles against Torino center-backs. He never had a chance to score, while his trademark layoffs frequently let him down.

Substitutes

Philip Billing – 6

Rafa Marin – 6.5

Billy Gilmour – N/A

Giacomo Raspadori – N/A

Giovanni Simeone – N/A

Follow us on Google News for more updates on Serie A and Italian football

Source link

Napoli steamrolled past mid-table Torino to go three points clear of defending Serie A champions Inter at the table’s summit.
