Fatigue got the better of the Nerazzurri as they succumbed to their hosts’ relentless pressure right at the death.

With injury ruling Marcus Thuram out of this high-stakes contest, Simone Inzaghi had a decision to make. Despite Marko Arnautovic’s scintillating scoring record in 2025, the Inter manager went for Joaquin Correa instead, which eventually returned to haunt the reigning champions.

Serie A’s most prolific side delivered arguably their weakest attacking performance this season. Furthermore, Bologna wasted a catalog of decent scoring chances down the final stretch, creating a common belief that Inter would get away with a robbery in Emilia-Romagna.

However, Vincenzo Italiano’s side ultimately got the goal they admittedly deserved for a breathless sprint toward the final whistle. Riccardo Orsolini slotted home a jaw-dropping overhead kick in the dying seconds to condemn Inter to their first defeat since mid-February.

Bologna’s triumph means there’s nothing but goal difference to separate Inter and Napoli heading into the final five rounds. Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 6

With Bologna attempting just one feeble shot on target, it was a relatively straightforward evening for the Swiss goalkeeper. Outstanding from the veteran!

Alessandro Bastoni – 6

Booked for pulling his opposition back early in the second half, Bastoni had to come off prematurely, though his performance didn’t inspire much conviction even before the caution.

Matteo Darmian – 6

Barring sporadic attempts to trouble Bologna’s backline, the experienced full-back had a relatively quiet game in an attacking sense but fared impressively at the back.

Nicolo Barella – 6.5

Trusted to charge Inter forward with his usual dynamism and offensive flair, the diminutive midfielder didn’t answer the call today as fatigue seemingly kicked in.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 5.5

Inter fans probably can’t remember the last time their talismanic playmaker made so many forced errors as today, one of which forced Henrikh Mkhitaryan to commit a bookable challenge.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6

Age is just a number in the Armenian’s case, as evidenced by yet another energetic showing, though his tireless runs often lacked end product and support in the final third.

Carlos Augusto – 7

Menace on the left flank, Augusto completed numerous overlapping runs even after switching to the center-back role, yet his decision-making frequently let him down.

Lautaro Martinez – 6

Despite failing to continue his scoring spree, El Toro worked his socks off at Dall’Ara, heavily participating in the build-up and even providing additional support to his defense.

Joaquin Correa – 3

Inzaghi’s decision to hand the Argentine a rare start on such a significant occasion backfired as he offered little threat up front, struggled with his hold-up play, and did nothing in front of goal.

Substitutes

Federico Dimarco – 5.5

Davide Frattesi – 5

Mehdi Taremi – 3

Marko Arnautovic – N/A

Yann Bisseck – N/A

Follow us on Google News for more updates on Serie A and Italian football

Source link

EMPOLI, ITALY – OCTOBER 30: Lautaro Martinez of FC Internazionale reacts during the Serie A match between Empoli and FC Internazionale at Stadio Carlo Castellani on October 30, 2024 in Empoli, Italy.
