Ignazio Abate’s side made it three consecutive wins in all competitions at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Friday 23 October. Torino led at the break and were two goals clear until Nathan Patterson’s own goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time gave Ivan Jurić’s Monza a late consolation.

Fitz-Jim and Belghali put Torino in front twice

The opener came in the 39th minute. Giovanni Simeone provided the assist for Kian Fitz-Jim, five minutes after Ardian Ismajli had been booked for a foul, the only card Andrea Zanotti showed all evening.

Monza needed just two minutes of the second half to draw level. Gustavo Varela struck in the 47th minute for his sixth league goal of the season, which puts him third in the Serie A scoring chart, level with Malen and one behind Frosinone’s Raimondo.

Rafik Belghali restored Torino’s lead in the 61st minute, with Gvidas Gineitis supplying the pass.

Vlašić rated best on the pitch

Nikola Vlašić made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute. Rated 8.2, the highest on the pitch, he also created 3 chances across his 90 minutes. Simeone matched that with 3 key passes of his own before going off after 71 minutes.

Torino carried far more threat in front of goal, with 17 shots to 7, 7 on target to 3, and expected goals of 1.26 against 0.6. Possession was almost even at 51% to 49%. Törnqvist was kept busy with 4 saves at the other end.

Patterson’s own goal came too late to matter.

Torino 10th ahead of Como visit

The result leaves Torino 10th on 10 points, nine behind joint leaders Inter and Lazio. Monza are 14th with 7 points, their 4-0 win over Cagliari followed by defeat in Turin.

Monza had won 1-0 at this ground in the Coppa Italia on 1 September. In Serie A, though, Torino are now unbeaten in their last five meetings with them, winning three.

Torino host Como on Tuesday 27 October, while Monza welcome Napoli on Wednesday 28 October.
