AC Milan beat Red Bull Salzburg 4-0 in Austria on Thursday in the second round of the Europa League league stage. The visitors led 2-0 at the break. Gonçalo Ramos added the fourth, and Filippo Terracciano was shown a red card in the 83rd minute.
Hutchinson, Bartesaghi and Rabiot set up Cissè
Alphadjo Cissè opened the scoring in the 15th minute, with Omari Hutchinson providing the assist. Davide Bartesaghi created the second in the 32nd minute, and Cissè finished again.
Four minutes after the restart, Adrien Rabiot teed up Cissè to complete his hat-trick. Each of his three goals came from a different provider.
Cissè was rated 9.65, the highest on the pitch. He needed 4 shots and 60 minutes to score his three. Rabiot and Hutchinson, both rated 7.7, were next best, with Hutchinson also booked for a foul in the 21st minute.
Ramos made it four in the 72nd minute during a 30-minute appearance. Valentin Zabransky was the only Salzburg player cautioned, in the 40th minute.
Salzburg’s 52% possession yields 2 shots on target
The hosts had slightly more of the ball, 52% to 48%, and completed 457 passes to Milan’s 428. They even took 14 shots to Milan’s 15. Only 2 of them were on target, and 8 of Salzburg’s attempts came from outside the box.
Milan were far more direct. Amorim’s side put 10 shots on target, 13 of their efforts came from inside the area, and Salzburg made 5 saves. Expected goals finished at 4.05 for Milan against 0.87 for the hosts.
Terracciano’s dismissal left Milan with ten men for the closing minutes. Salzburg could not respond.
The scoreline matched the most recent meeting between the clubs, when Milan won by the same margin at home in the Champions League on 2 November 2022. A 1-1 draw in Salzburg on 6 September 2022 preceded it, so Milan are unbeaten in 3 meetings with the Austrian side.
Atalanta and Altach on Sunday
This was Milan’s first win since a 3-0 victory over Lecce, with a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo in between. Their run before that featured a 2-0 defeat to Benfica and draws with Lazio and Juventus.
Salzburg have now gone 3 matches without a win. Before this defeat they drew 0-0 with Grazer AK and lost 2-1 to FC BW Linz, and their last victory was a 3-0 win over Sturm Graz.
Both clubs return to domestic action on Sunday 18 October. Salzburg host SCR Altach in the Austrian Bundesliga, while Milan welcome Atalanta in Serie A.
