Serie A side Roma attempted to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United in January but they remain in the fray for his signature.

The ex-Bologna player has never played enough to make a mark at Old Trafford. This makes a return to Italy as the best way to reinvigorate his career.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Gian Piero Gasperini had spoken to the attacker regarding a January transfer. He appeared keen and the Italian hasn’t given up. During discussions involving him and the Friedkin ownership, the Manchester United player’s name was discussed prominently.

Gasperini is aware that Zirkzee is unhappy with his playing time at the Red Devils and wants to try moving for him again.

He has also earmarked a role for the player. Zirkzee is seen as a left attacking midfielder in the 3-4-2-1, allowing Donyell Malen someone to combine with and bring more out of him in an all-Dutch duo. If Malen isn’t available, Zirkzee can easily step in as the striker as well.

Manchester United are believed to want €25 million to sell the player permanently. Roma’s approach remains to be seen but they are keen, again.

Roma wise to return

In January, Roma failed to land a lot of Gasperini’s targets and this has caused chaos across the season.

That is why meeting his demands will be key for the club. Zirkzee is someone who offers the dynamism that Gasperini wants in his forwards and his link-up ability is tailor made for his system too.

Manchester United’s valuation could be a problem but if the player pushes, a deal can be done.
