Jose Mourinho has always held Serie A close to his heart because of his spells at Roma and Inter. He has now revealed that the Giallorossi was the best club he ever worked at.
The Portuguese’s time in Rome didn’t end in the best possible way. There was talk around squables with the Friedkin ownership and he had fallen into the old patterns of calling out referees and officiating.
This hasn’t changed how he sees the Giallorossi. He spoke to Il Giornale in a detailed interview and was mainly asked about his time at Roma and how he looks back on the stint.
Mourinho made it clear that it was the best place he ever worked at.
He said – via La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Rome is the best place I’ve ever worked.”
“Why is it so hard to win in Rome? I don’t know, for me it’s the best place of my career. I’ve never felt such an incredible atmosphere around a football team, the Olimpico is always full, the way the people feel about the players.”
Mourinho also addressed whether the expectations from Roma fans for their club are too high or not.
He sided with the fans, saying: “Is the level of demand high? It’s not a tragedy because when we won the Conference, the celebrations were incredible. Not even in my Champions League triumphs have I seen scenes like this.”
“But my Roma is over, I don’t want to say anything else. In fact, one thing- no one should blame the Roma fans by saying it’s their fault if we don’t win. The Giallorossi fans are the ones who help the team, no one should touch them.”
He also spoke about his battles against the referees during his time at the Giallorossi, revealing his battle was actually against the systems in place in Calcio.
“My battle was against the system, not the referees,” adds the Portuguese. “In reality, I believe that Italian football is no different from other clubs, it’s just that here, cyclically, they manage to investigate and clean up.”
This isn’t the first time Mourinho has been all praises for Roma fans and his admiration was clear during his time at the club too. It is fair to say that a bond still exists between the two and it will continue to exist for years.
