Robin Gosens was close to swapping Fiorentina for Nottingham Forest on deadline day.

A report has now emerged explaining why the Viola left-back declined a move to the English Premier League.

Forest moved decisively for Gosens, while Fiorentina kept the door firmly open on a late sale.

In fact, the clubs had already reached an agreement, leaving the decision in the player’s hands.

However, Gosens said no, despite what was described as a generous pay rise and a long contract offer.

Robin Gosens snubs Nottingham Forest for sporting and personal reasons

Robin Gosens has been a regular with Fiorentina since moving from Union Berlin in 2024.

But while the Viola have been struggling this season, the 31-year-old has decided to stay put.

Tuttomercatoweb report Forest offered Gosens a three-and-a-half-year deal until the end of the 2028/29 season.

The proposal from the Premier League side also included a “generous” salary increase.

However, Gosens thanked Forest and informed Fiorentina he wanted to remain, at least until the end of the season.

The key reason was because wanted to help Fiorentina save their season, rather than jumping ship mid-campaign.

There were also personal factors. The same piece points to ‘private and family issues, related to his life and that of his family in Florence’.

When he made the move, Gosens spoke how much Fiorentina meant to him.

Robin Gosens and what happens next after the Forest approach

The Nottingham Forest interest was not the first time Gosens has been close to leaving Fiorentina.

The same report says Atalanta explored a move for him last summer, but the switch never happened.

On that occasion, Stefano Pioli reportedly blocked the deal because he did not want to lose a key option on the left.

Now, attention turns to the final months of the season, with Gosens firmly in the picture for their fight for survival.

However, the summer window could be a different matter altogether for Gosens.

In the summer, he will have more time to reassess his future and tie up any loose ends.

Forest will probably not bother again, as they have signed an alternative in Luca Netz.

For now, Fiorentina’s focus is on getting results, while Gosens has the chance to play a leading role in the run-in.

In other news, Fabio Paratici has joined Fiorentina and will look to steer the Viola out of danger and into a new era.
