Inter are sweating on Neres’ fitness ahead of the huge Serie A title clash.

Napoli have confirmed that David Neres suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s 2-0 win over Lazio in Serie A.

David Neres faces race to overcome ankle injury for Napoli trip to Inter

Neres underwent checks on Monday after twisting his left ankle during Sunday’s victory away at Lazio.

The Brazilian went down off the ball midway through the second half after playing a routine pass to Stanislav Lobotka.

Neres had to be helped off the pitch by two medical staff members and appeared in pain whenever he tried to put weight on his left foot.

On Monday, Napoli put out a statement on their website confirming that Neres has indeed suffered an injury.

“David Neres, injured during the match against Lazio, underwent tests today at Pineta Grande Hospital, which revealed a sprain to his left ankle,” they wrote.

“The Azzurro has already begun his rehabilitation process.”

Sky Italia have reported that Neres will definitely miss the Serie A meeting with Hellas Verona on Wednesday, January 7.

Could Neres be back in time for Inter clash?

Neres will ‘try to recover’ for the match against Inter at San Siro on Sunday, January 11, according to Sky Italia.

Meanwhile, Gianluca Di Marzio noted that it usually takes seven to 10 days to recover from ankle sprains.

A quick return would be a boost for Antonio Conte, but ankle sprains can be unpredictable.

Napoli’s staff will reassess Neres day by day as swelling and pain levels settle, and should have a clearer picture later in the week.

If Neres progresses quickly, a place on the bench against Inter is possible, even if a start may be ambitious.

Otherwise, Napoli could rest him with a view to bringing him back against Parma on Wednesday, January 14.

January is a very busy month for Napoli, with seven games between now and the end of the month.

Elsewhere, Rasmus Hojlund is expected to join Napoli permanently, and a new contract for Antonio Conte could be on the cards.
