Roma have been dealt a blow in the shape of Lorenzo Pellegrini suffering a hamstring injury, according to reports.

How long will Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini be out due to injury?

Sky Sport Italia says Pellegrini suffered a second-degree tear to his left biceps femoris in training on Christmas Eve.

The injury is set to keep him out for three to four weeks, dealing Gian Piero Gasperini another selection problem.

Pellegrini has been a key figure for Roma, but questions over form and his longer-term future have also been doing the rounds.

Sky’s medical timeframe points to a return around the end of January, with Roma’s staff hoping to have him available again as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Corriere dello Sport have reported that January 25 is down as a potential comeback date for Pellegrini.

This would see Pellegrini return for the huge Serie A game between Roma and Milan.

However, this has been described as an “objective” for the Giallorossi skipper, rather than a certainty.

Should Pellegrini miss the Milan game, the Europa League trip to Panathinaikos on January 29 could be next up.

For now, Roma will manage his recovery carefully, with hamstring injuries often requiring caution to avoid setbacks.

Which Roma games could Pellegrini miss?

Roma are embarking on a busy spell without Pellegrini, starting with Roma v Genoa on December 29 in Serie A.

Pellegrini would also miss league matches against Atalanta (January 3), Lecce (January 6) and Sassuolo (January 10).

Roma then face Torino twice in quick succession, in the Coppa Italia last 16 on January 13 and in Serie A on January 18.

Just four days later, the Giallorossi host Germany’s Stuttgart in the Europa League.

Based on a potential return in the Milan game, Pellegrini would miss seven Roma games.

Should he return against Panathinaikos, then it would be an eight-game stint on the sidelines.

The timing is especially frustrating because every performance had started to feel like a test, with his contract situation also in the background.

Pellegrini’s current Roma deal expires at the end of June next year.

Elsewhere, the Giallorossi appear to have a busy January ahead on the transfer front.

Roma like Joshua Zirkzee, and have also been linked with the likes of Radu Dragusin and Morten Frendrup.
