Davide Nicola Praises ‘Perfect’ Jamie Vardy
Jamie Vardy rolled back the years during Cremonese’s surprise victory over Bologna, as the 38-year-old scored his third and fourth Serie A goals of the season.
Davide Nicola’s side took the lead after 31 minutes through a superb strike by Martin Payero and Cremonese doubled their lead just four-minutes later, as Vardy latched onto the ball before rounding the keeper and finishing into an empty net.
Bologna pulled one back from the penalty spot just before the break, but Vardy’s night was not finished as the veteran striker restored Cremonese’s two-goal lead just five-minutes into the second half.
The former Premier League star has now scored four goals in seven Serie A starts, which is more than the likes of Moise Kean and the recently injured Dusan Vlahovic.
Many questioned the decision to sign a 38-year-old striker that was coming off the worst season of his career, but Davide Nicola has revealed that Vardy is a ‘perfect’ player for Cremonese.
Nicola said: “Talking about Jamie is an understatement. We’re clearly talking about a great champion, and champions are the simplest people in the world.
“They’re perfect because they know why they’re there, how they got there, and what they have to do to stay there. Jamie is a great professional who knows how to prepare for a match week, taking advantage of his skills.”
Vardy’s deal in Serie A is set to expire in June 2026 as the Brit only signed a one-year deal with Cremonese, but his recent performances could bring a longer spell in Italy.
Cremonese Prepare Extended Deal For Jamie Vardy
Cremonese signed Vardy as a free agent after the Englishman parted ways with Leicester City in June 2025, bringing an end to a 13-year relationship.
The 38-year-old won the Premier League and FA Cup with the Foxes, while also leaving as the club’s leading-scorer with 200 goals in 500 appearances.
Reaching this historic level with Cremonese is not possible for Vardy as he nears the final stages of his career, but the Serie A side are hoping to keep the veteran forward for another season.
Bringing in older strikers has not been as successful for other Serie A sides, with Fiorentina failing to get the best out of 39-year-old Edin Dzeko and the Bosnian faces a huge fine after an issue with La Viola supporters.
In contrast, Cremonese supporters have taken Vardy to their hearts and the former Premier League player appears to be enjoying life in Italy.
The Italian side will only be able to offer Vardy an extended deal if they stay in Serie A, which is becoming a more realistic objective as Nicola’s side sit 11th in the table.
