Serie A side Como 1907 have stunned supporters across the globe by using Twitter to hire a new first team scout in Ben Mattinson.

Who Is Como’s New First Team Scout?

In an ever-evolving world, Como have decided to use social media to hire Ben Mattinson as a new first team scout as the Englishman made his name through analysis on Twitter.

On November 6th, Mattinson took to social media to reveal that he has been working as a first team scout at Como for the ‘past couple months’ and claimed it was a dream to work with Cesc Fabregas.

Mattinson has amassed 60,000 followers on Twitter through his work and featured on a host of outlets, analysing players from multiple leagues since starting over two-years ago.

The excitement around working with Fabregas comes as Mattinson is a life-long Arsenal supporter and the Spaniard’s name was on the back of his first Gunners jersey.

One of Mattinson’s biggest strengths is looking into data around unknown players, like the brightest prospects in the MLS, and suggesting which club would be best suited to their qualities.

In May 2024, the new Como scout identified Dean Huijsen and Cristhian Mosquera as two players to watch for Spain, with the former now playing for Real Madrid and the latter moving to Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

Interestingly, Ben Mattinson’s appointment is not the first time Como have turned to Twitter to hire a new member of staff, as the Italian side also brought in Felix Johnston.

Johnston also made his name on social media and has seen his account rise to 200,000 followers, as the Chelsea fan offers analysis around players across Europe.

Why Did Como Hire Ben Mattinson?

Social media has offered a platform for soccer fans to provide opinions on teams, players and managers, while also producing a relatively new concept called a ‘tactico’.

A tactico uses in depth statistics to highlight multiple areas in the sport, bringing light to the abilities of younger players, dissecting the systems used by managers and explaining tactical decisions made by teams in vital matches.

An example of this would be looking into the stats behind Daniele De Rossi’s appointment at Genoa, as the Italian takes on his second managerial role in Serie A.

Como saw the content produced by Mattinson over the course of two-years and were impressed by his ability to identify young talent, while also covering the pros and cons of a player.

The new Como scout has found success on Twitter by pointing out talents from Serie A that could go on to achieve great things, as Mattinson was one of the first to cover Tijjani Reijnders before his move to Manchester City.

Cesc Fabregas brought in 19 players during the recent summer transfer window, spending over €100 million and breaking the club transfer record on multiple occasions.

There was clearly an overarching aim to bring in young and exciting talent, as Como signed 11 players that fulfilled the U-23 category which included three teenagers in Jesus Rodríguez (19), Felippe Jack (19) and Jayden Addai (19).

Obviously bringing in younger prospects is a key goal for both Como and Fabregas, which supports their decision to appoint Mattinson due to his expertise in the field.

Has Another Professional Soccer Team Hired Someone From Twitter?

Appointing two first team scouts from Twitter in the space of a few months is an interesting move by Como, as professional soccer teams tend to hire people with real-life experience.

However, the Serie A side are not the only professional team to appoint someone from social media, as Luton Town appointed Jay Socik as head of recruitment analysis in February 2021.

Similarly to Mattinson, Socik made his name on social media through player and team analysis through the twitter account ‘@blades_analytic’.

Socik was part of the Luton set-up that made its way into the Premier League and saw the Hatters bring in the likes of Ross Barkley and Tahith Chong.

Luton have struggled since reaching the English top-flight, facing consecutive relegation and are currently competing in the third tier of English soccer – League One.

Currently, Como are the only side in Europe’s top five leagues to make a real push towards hiring staff from social media and could lead the way to more talents being brought to the biggest stage.
