When Evan Ferguson joined Roma on loan in the summer, many believed the 21-year-old would reignite his soccer career.
After bursting onto the scene at Brighton, Ferguson was considered one of the brightest prospects in Europe. He famously netted a hat-trick against Newcastle whereby many declared that the sky was the limit for the Irishman.
However, Ferguson’s form has stagnated in recent seasons. That led to the Seagulls allowing the youngster to leave on a temporary basis in the 2025 summer transfer window.
🚨 Roma want to renegotiate the terms of Brighton forward Evan Ferguson’s loan deal, with the 21-year-old potentially returning to the Seagulls in January.

Serie A And Roma Struggles
In pre-season, Evan Ferguson’s four-goal haul on his debut suggested that Roma had pulled off a coup in snaring the young Ireland international.
Admittedly, his goals came against Serie D opposition but it was the perfect introduction to his new head coach and fellow teammates.
Nonetheless, his strong summer form has not transitioned into Serie A or the Europa League. Ferguson is yet to find the back of the net in either competition and has just one assist to his name.
His poor stats perhaps boil down to a confidence issue. It’s easy to forget Ferguson is still only 21 and the differences in English and Italian soccer can take some getting used to.
Not only that, Ferguson has suffered a number of previous injuries which appear to have hampered his progress. Hence why Brighton allowed their former prodigy to leave on loan.
Not all is lost, though. Time is very much on Ferguson’s side but his latest injury setback suggests he will miss the next 2-3 weeks of action.
That time off can in some ways come as a blessing to the Irishman. It will provide the perfect opportunity to address any off-field issues he may be enduring and he can fully focus on coming back sharper than ever.
Naturally, that is easier said than done. It’s no secret that there is an abundance of potential in Ferguson but perhaps once he adapts fully to the Italian game, he can flourish.
Evan Ferguson Roma Transfer Details
The Evan Ferguson loan fee is understood to be €3million for the 2025-26 season. A relatively modest fee for a player who offered so much promise.
It’s reported that Roma does have an option to make the deal permanent. But are in no way inclined or obliged to do so. As it stands, that appears to have been a sensible move.
In fact, parent club Brighton probably wouldn’t have wanted to see a top prospect leave the Amex. Especially when the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich were heavily linked with him when he burst onto the scene.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi are already unconvinced by Ferguson and want to renegotiate with the Seagulls so he can potentially return to England in January.
That may seem somewhat harsh and drastic but if Ferguson is failing to adapt to head coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s system – and the way of life in Italy – it’s a possibility that may come to fruition.
How Many Goals Has Evan Ferguson Scored For Roma?
To date, Evan Ferguson hasn’t scored a single competitive goal for Roma in any competition. The 21-year-old has featured in 10 games and accumulated 420 minutes.
He did provide the winning assist for Argentina’s Matias Soule in the 1-0 victory against Pisa on matchday 2. Unfortunately, that’s as good as it has gotten so far.
In Serie A, Ferguson has registered a total of eight shots at goal. The most in a single game was three in the season opener against Bologna.
When it comes to the Europa League, a total of three from the same number of games have been recorded. His form simply hasn’t impressed Gian Piero Gasperini who has often rotated the Irishman.
What Next For Evan Ferguson?
Right now, the main focus for Evan Ferguson is to return to the field as quickly as possible. If he can net his first competitive Roma goal next month, things will look a lot more rosier for the 21-year-old.
However, many inside the Giallorossi camp believe time is already up and the potential return to Brighton is the only viable outcome.
That is something which will need to be spoken about in-house. It’s likely that Ferguson will not want to cut short his time in the capital as he’ll not be a guaranteed starter at Brighton.
With that in mind, only time will tell what will happen. If Gasperini is willing to give Ferguson another chance, it’ll be an opportunity that Ferguson can simply not pass up.
