Leon Bailey signed for Roma on loan during the 2025 summer transfer window, with hopes of reviving his career as the Jamaican failed to impress in the Premier League.

However, his time with the Serie A side got off to the worst possible start, as Bailey suffered a thigh injury during his first training session and missed the opening six league matches.

The 28-year-old made his Serie A debut on October 18th during Roma’s 1-0 defeat by Inter Milan, before making his first start in the league in the following matchday against Sassuolo.

Bailey’s performances failed to meet Gian Piero Gasperini’s expectations and this was made extremely apparent in Roma’s latest league clash against Parma.

The Jamaican international came on for Evan Ferguson after the Irishman was forced off with injury in the eighth minute and to many people’s surprise, Bailey did not return to the pitch following the half-time break.

Gasperini decided to ‘substitute the substitute’, meaning Bailey played for around 40 minutes and highlighted his fragility in the Roma squad this season.

Absence from Serie A is not the only concern for Bailey, as Roma are one of the worst performing Italian sides in Europe and Bailey has played just 23 minutes in Roma’s three Europa League matches so far.

Given his struggles in the Italian capital so far, many are questioning whether the Jamaican will fulfill his one-year loan spell or terminate his deal in January.

The Giallorossi are covering the entirety of Bailey’s wages during his time in Italy and the 28-year-old is reportedly earning around €124,000 – making him the second-highest paid player in Rome.

If Bailey’s performances do not improve before the 2026 January window, Roma are reportedly willing to cut his loan spell short and send the winger back to England.

Is Leon Bailey’s Buy-Option At Roma An Obligation?

Loan deals have seen a slight tweak in recent years, as clubs now include a ‘buy-option’ with hopes of signing the player for a lower price if they perform during the initial spell.

The buy-option comes in two forms, an obligation-to-buy or option-to-buy, meaning clubs can either decide to sign the player for the pre-agreed fee or have no choice in the decision.

These options tend to come with various clauses, for example, Napoli will have to purchase Rasmus Hojlund permanently if they finish in the top four this season.

Roma agreed a €22 million fee with Aston Villa for Leon Bailey, however, this will be an option for the Giallorossi as the Italian side did not sign an obligatory buy option.

Who Could Sign Leon Bailey?

If Leon Bailey decides to terminate his deal with the Giallorossi in the January transfer window, he will be looking to find a new suitor straight away.

A return to Aston Villa seems unlikely as the Villains have started to find form and Unai Emery clearly prefers the likes of Morgan Rogers, Donyell Malen, Evann Guessand and Emiliano Buendia.

Bailey is also looking to compete at the 2026 World Cup, as Jamaica sit top of their World Cup qualifying group and are two games away from competing at their second WC.

Staying in Serie A seems an unlikely option, however, Bailey could commit the ultimate sin and sign for Lazio, as the Laziali are targeting players in January once their transfer ban comes to an end.

Returning to the Premier League is an interesting option for Bailey, as West Ham have shown interest in the Jamaican during previous transfer windows and the Hammers are struggling this season.

A move to Saudi Arabia appears to the most likely option for the Giallorossi loanee and the 28-year-old reportedly negotiated with several Saudi Pro League sides during the summer window.
