Spanish soccer icon, Pedro, is in the final year of his contract with Lazio and the 38-year-old is close to making a decision over a new deal or possibly retiring in 2026.
Will Pedro Sign New Lazio Contract?
Pedro is currently taking part in his 17th season as a professional soccer player and the former Barcelona star is still playing at the highest level, making seven appearances in Serie A in 2025/26.
The veteran winger signed for Lazio in August 2021, with many expecting the Spaniard to play a secondary role and move elsewhere after a season or two.
His move the Laziali was met with a host of criticism as the Spanish star committed the ultimate betrayal – leaving AS Roma to sign for their fiercest rivals.
After an impressive spell with the blue half of Rome, Pedro was rewarded with an extended deal in June 2025 and will be out of contract in June next year.
Since signing for the Laziali, Pedro has made 183 appearances and contributed to 52 goals (34G + 18), but has failed to win any silverware during his time in Serie A.
At 38-years of age Pedro is undoubtedly in the latter stages of his career and Lazio are reportedly looking to bring in some younger options once their transfer ban comes to an end.
The Laziali are reportedly interested in Dynamo Kyiv winger, Nazar Voloshyn, which would push Pedro further down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri.
Pedro’s contract extension in June of this year came as the Laziali were unable to sign any fresh faces during the summer window, as the FIGC handed the club a transfer embargo for financial breaches.
With just one assist in Serie A this season, Pedro has not forced Lazio into making a fresh contract offer and the Spaniard has a decision to make over his future in 2026.
Could Pedro Retire In 2026?
One possibility that has reportedly been considered by the Lazio star is retirement, as Pedro will turn 39 in July 2026 and has seen a slight decline this season.
The Spanish soccer star has enjoyed an astonishingly successful career since debuting in 2008, winning three Champions Leagues, five La Ligas, three Copa del Reys, one Premier League, one FA Cup, three FIFA Club World Cups and three UEFA Super Cups
Picking up 19 trophies at club level is not Pedro’s only claim to fame, as the Lazio star has lifted multiple trophies with Spain, winning the World Cup in 2010 and European Championship in 2012.
The career of a soccer player is a limited period and has followed the same cycle throughout history, as the younger players take the place of the veterans.
Young players are making their way into Serie A, with a host of Italy U-21 players pushing to make a statement this season and Pedro may be aware that his time in the sport is coming to an end.
In November 2024, Pedro stated that he wanted to win silverware with Lazio before retiring from the sport, but the Laziali’s performance in 2025/26 has made that rather difficult.
Maurizio Sarri’s side currently sit 12th in Serie A with just two wins from eight league matches, meaning their chance of winning the Scudetto is extremely low.
Lazio failed to qualify for Europe last season, meaning Pedro’s only chance of winning silverware will come in Coppa Italia and the Laziali will face AC Milan in the Ro16.
Any decision over his future will have to wait until next summer, but if the Spaniard can lift the Coppa Italia trophy then he may hang his boots up in 2026.
