Inter Milan are reportedly weighing-up a move for Manchester City defender, John Stones, as the Englishman’s deal is set to expire in June 2026.
Will John Stones Sign New Manchester City Contract?
The 31-year-old defender could be on his way out of Manchester after, as his deal comes to a close next year and would end a 10-year spell at the Etihad.
During his time with the Cityzens, Stones has made 283 appearances and picked up a stunning list of accolades, winning six Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Supercup.
Despite being an overall success for the Cityzens, Stones has continued to battle with injuries and missed 35 matches through a variety of knocks last season.
The Englishman started in City’s opening three Premier League matches this season, before missing the 3-0 victory over Manchester United through injury.
Since then, Stones has not started in the league and has been an unused substitute in both of City’s most recent Premier League encounters – but the defender was called up to the England squad.
Stones’ consistent problems with injury means that City are unlikely to offer him a renewed contract, with his last extension coming in August 2021.
Multiple players in the Premier League are out of contract in June 2026, with Casemiro attracting interest from Serie A as his deal with Manchester United nears an end.
If Stones were to leave City at the end of the season he would have multiple clubs interested, with several Premier League sides looking for a player of his quality.
City have seen a lot of star players leave the club in recent times, with Stones’ good friend Kyle Walker joining Burnley, Kevin De Bruyne ending his decade-long City career by joining Napoli and Ilkay Gundogan signing for Galatasaray.
Manuel Akanji left the Cityzens on loan during the summer transfer window to join Inter Milan and the Nerazzurri are reportedly interested in signing another Manchester City defender next year.
Could Inter Milan Sign John Stones For Free?
Multiple players have run down their contracts and moved on after becoming a free agent, with Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold being the biggest examples.
Stones could be the latest player to follow this path, as the 31-year-old would be available as a free agent in the 2026 summer transfer window.
Inter Milan would be able to negotiate with the Englishman during the January window over a ‘pre-contract agreement’ as players with six-months or less on their deal are free to talk with other clubs.
The Nerazzurri are looking to bolster their roster as Cristian Chivu continues to find his feet in Milan and Inter are reportedly interested in signing Malick Fofana.
Signing the Lyon star would not be an easy task financially, meaning Inter will need to be shrewd when looking to make additional signings and signing stones as a free agent would be an impressive piece of business.
If Stones does not agree a new deal in Manchester then Inter will be keen to agree a deal, but the Italian side will face stiff competition from multiple clubs.
