Serie A fans have been questioning why Benjamin Cremaschi has not been given a chance at Parma this season after the USMNT scored a brace to eliminate Italy from the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Who Is Benjamin Cremaschi?
Benjamin Cremaschi is currently stealing the show at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, after contributing to seven goals in four appearances for the United States.
The 20-year-old kicked off his campaign with five goal contributions in the USA’s 9-1 win over New Caledonia, as Cremaschi scored a hat-trick and assisted two more goals.
Most recently, the young midfielder helped the United States reach the quarter finals with a 3-0 win over Italy, as the American opened the scoring after 15 minutes and provided the killing blow in the 93rd minute.
But where has this star come from? Well, Cremaschi is currently on loan to Serie A side Parma, after joining the club in September from MLS giants, Inter Miami.
Italy had a host of players to watch at the U-20 World Cup, however, none of the Azzurrini’s star men could keep up with Cremaschi who has enjoyed a meteoric rise.
After working his way through the amateur soccer scene in the United States, Cremaschi joined Inter Miami’s academy in 2021 and caught the eye for the clubs youth setup.
After helping the U-17 side win the Generation Adidas Cup in 2022, Cremaschi secured a place in the MLS Next All-Star roster and scored five goals for the Inter Miami II side.
This led to a call-up to Inter Miami’s senior team, alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, as at 17-years-old Cremaschi made his senior debut in November 2022.
Since then, Cremaschi has continued to rise in the sport and picked up 107 appearances for Inter Miami, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
However, his time in the United States came to an end, albeit temporarily, in the summer as Cremaschi looked for consistent playing time and a chance to showcase his skills in Europe.
Has Benjamin Cremaschi Played In Serie A?
The 20-year-old parted ways with Inter Miami after Javier Mascherano failed to offer Cremaschi a regular spot in the starting eleven and was played in a variety of positions.
Joining Parma was a step-up for the American, as Serie A would give Benjamin Cremaschi a fiercer challenge than MLS, however, the youngster is yet to make an appearance for the Italian side.
Cremaschi has made the matchday squad in two of Parma’s matches so far and was pulled away from club responsibility to compete at the U-20 World Cup.
Parma have made a poor start to the 2025/26 season, picking up five points from six matches and currently sit 14th in Serie A – suffering a disappointing defeat to Lecce most recently.
However, Cremaschi may get his chance to play for the Italian side in the Coppa Italia Ro16, as Parma will face Bologna on December 4th and may field a rotated side to focus on league action.
Could Benjamin Cremaschi Play For Italy?
Cremaschi was born and raised in the United States, meaning he is likely to commit to the USMNT in the future – but the youngster is eligible for two other nations.
The Parma loanee has accumulated three caps for the USMNT senior side, making his debut under Gregg Berhalter in September 2023 during a 4-0 win over Oman.
However, his three appearances for the United States have all come in international friendlies meaning he can still switch nationalities in the future.
Cremaschi was called up to the Argentina U-20 side in December 2022 for a training camp before the South American U-20 Championship – but was not selected for the final squad.
The youngster is eligible for Argentina as his parents are both of Argentina nationality and Cremaschi is also available to play for Italy as his great-grandfather is from Bologna.
FIFA recently tweaked its rules for players looking to switch national teams and can do so if they have not played more than three competitive matches for the nation before 21.
It is unlikely that Cremaschi will switch from the USMNT to the Azzurri, but the 20-year-old does have the option to do so.
