USMNT star Weston McKennie has given Juventus team-mate Michele Di Gregorio his number 16 shirt for the 2025-26 season.
Di Gregorio’s late father was fond of the number so McKennie has happily obliged to let the Italian shot-stopper wear it for the new campaign.
Now, McKennie is set to sport the number 22 on his back for the Old Lady this term. It’s understood that Di Gregorio personally asked the 26-year-old who duly obliged.

Why Did Weston McKennie Give Michele Di Gregorio His Shirt Number?
Quite simply, Michele Di Gregorio’s late father was very fond of the number 16. The exact reasons aren’t known why but Weston McKennie was happy to trade.
Although McKennie is set to run down his Juventus contract, he showed true sportsmanship after Di Gregorio personally asked the USMNT star.
McKennie may or may not leave Turin this window owing to doubts regarding his long-term future. Nonetheless, the versatile midfielder was happy to help his friend and team-mate out.
Di Gregorio personally asked McKennie for the 16 shirt because his late father was very fond of that number. The American midfielder immediately accepted and decided to give up his shirt number. #Juventus

Will Weston McKennie Quit Juventus?
Weston McKennie – who has taken the number 22 this season – may be vacating that soon as well. That is because the American could be finding new employment in the coming weeks.
McKennie’s form dipped somewhat last season under the guidance of Thiago Motta and current head coach Igor Tudor.
A number of new additions have signed for the Old Lady this summer so McKennie’s game time isn’t guaranteed for the upcoming season. Interest in McKennie is relatively scarce but Juve could welcome offers for around €15million.
If that is the case, a flurry of suitors are sure to reach out to Tudor’s side about signing him for the 2025-26 season.
What Is Weston McKennie’s Best Position?
That in itself is a million dollar question. Weston McKennie is classed as a midfielder but his best position on the soccer field is the subject of hot debate.
Many consider his most natural place is in the number eight role. However, he has previously played in defence as well as attack. Often on the right-hand side.
McKennie boasts incredible stamina and has all the attributes to make him a fine ‘box-to-box’ player. Hence why coaches have struggled to determine his best position.
The USMNT star is extremely hardworking and his athleticism means he can be utilized in a number of areas across the park. This has also been the case when he has represented the national side.
