Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing to smash their transfer record for AC Milan star, Rafael Leao, as Son Heung-min nears a move to the MLS.

Are Tottenham Interested In Rafael Leao?

In a stunning turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly willing to smash their current transfer record to bring Rafael Leao to north London this summer.

This comes after the shocking news that club captain and Spurs legend, Son Heung-min announced his departure from the club, ending a relationship that has spanned across 10-years.

The South Korean international has made 454 appearances for the Lilywhites and contributed to 274 goals (173G + 101A) along the way, capping off his time with the club by winning the Europa League.

With the 33-year-old moving on, Spurs are now in desperate need of some additional firepower in the attacking third, especially after James Maddison suffered a major injury during a pre-season clash against Newcastle.

Dejan Kuluesevski is reportedly out until the Christmas period, leaving Thomas Frank with limited options up front and Richarlison has also been rumored with a move away.

Dealing with a slight crisis in attack has seen Spurs’ odds of finishing in the top four drastically drop on offshore sportsbooks, however, this could change if Rafael Leao makes his way to the Europa League champions.

The Portuguese winger was heavily linked with a move away from Milan during the opening stages of this summer transfer window, as Bayern Munich were reportedly in talks with the Italian side.

A move failed to materialize and since then, Leao has appeared to be more accepting over another season at the San Siro, as the winger currently has three-years remaining on his current contract.

However, this situation has now been slightly altered after Tottenham Hotspur reportedly discussed the possibility of submitting a bid that would smash their current transfer record – which is currently the $80m spent on Dominic Solanke.

Does Leao Have A Release Clause At AC Milan?

The Portuguese winger is one of the most talked about players in Europe, but at 25-years of age, his time as a promising youngster is slowly coming to an end.

Since joining the Rossoneri in August 2019 from Lille, Leao has gone on to make 260 appearances, contributing to 132 goals (70G + 62A) and winning one Serie A title and Supercoppa Italiana.

According to reports, Leao had a release clause of around $180m during a 10-day period at the start of this transfer window and this has now come to an end.

Now, the Rossoneri may be willing to accept a bid that falls into the region of $120-$150m, especially with Leao pushing for a move away during this transfer window.

Massimiliano Allegri has already looked into reinforcements in the attacking area, as AC Milan are said to be rivaling Aston Villa for Porto striker, Samu Aghehowa.

Any move for the Spaniard would rely on the future of both Leao and Santiago Gimenez, with the latter being tipped to leave the club after a poor start in Italy.

As we previously mentioned, Leao has three-years remaining on his current deal in Milan and Spurs would need to smash their transfer record by almost $50m.
